Details: After diving Blairgowrie i thought i’d give Rye a look. There were boats and jetskii’s everywhere and the beach was lined with people like a mediterranian resort. It was fairly quiet underwater though. A seal was a nice suprise and it suprised the hell out of a few snorkellers and swimmers that were on the surface.

Details: On our way back to the boat ramp we nearly hit the boilers of the Orungal wreck, submerged only centimetres below the water. Luckily we saw it at the last minute, so decided it would make a good tank emptier of a dive. It turned out to be the best 30bar ever spent! My first sighting Eagle rays, and the area was teeming with fishlife, notably Luderick which are very rare around PPB and surrounds. A great little 3rd dive to top off a great day.

Details: Wow this was some dive. When you make it in for a dive along the 13th beach stretch of coast, it always feels ‘wild’. (and kind of dangerous). The terrain really matched the same feeling with masses of crayweed over loose rounded stones and boulders. Herring cale were EVERYWHERE in all shapes and sizes, with ‘stange’ looking magpie perch, and plenty of wrasse and a few snapper. I stayed under until it was getting too dark and sharky, and then on exiting hitting the beach, i looked along a seemingly endless stretch of golden beach, with a beautiful sunset setting across the water and just thought “I’m so privileged to be living in one of the most amazing parts of the world!”

Details: Chris and myself took the boat out to sound around charlemont reef. We found a really nice dropoff that turned out to be a 4-5m high wall running parallel to the shore. It was a really great dive, until we took off and i realised my camera was still on a line hanging over the back of the boat. It did a great job of waterskiing, unfortunately my ss400 strobe wasn;t as talented and went plummeting into the depths. If anyone finds a SS400 around barwon heads, let me know! ;)

Details: Took the boat exploring from the Clifton Springs Ramp and came across a nice little area of reef i’ve dubbed the Zen Gardens. Its a fairly barren rocky outcrop with sparse scatterings of sponges and ascidian. I only had the macro on, but i was determined to revisit with the wide angle to capture the zen-ness of this place.

Details: I’d never been out off the township of Pt Lonsdale. It was hard to get a park around this time of year, but i took what i could get and took the nearest stairwell. I ended up heading out from the small breakwater and then headed south east. Towards the end of the dive, i came across a wall teeming with fish life. Including a blue-lined leatherjacket. Details: Myself and Chris were going to take the boat out, but Divevic called him into work as a deckie, so somehow i managed to sneak a couple of free dives. Boarfish reef was the first dive, and it was sensational. The water was very clear however somehow we missed slack and the current was running hard. Some really colourful life on this dive.

Details: It was such a great day that i continued down the coast, yet it was getting dark and i only had about 35bar left. To the sane…not enough for a dive..let alone in unknown area on the rugged coastline of the great ocean road. But my new tablet and mapping software showed a reef running diagonally out from shore and i just had to check it out while conditions were flat. The reef turned out to be a series of rounded boulders with lots of fishlife darting around. A pity i only had a small amount of air left. I hope to get out here another day.

Max Depth: 8.4m

Air usage: 170bar/2500psi

Details: The weather was on the improve and the swell dropping so i headed down the coast and dropped into Urquharts bluff. It was ordinary the other time i dived it, but conditions were much better today and the water looked great. I parked half way down the hill to the carpark and headed out from there. Interesting boulders in the first 50-100 metres out, but since conditions where so good i continued out further and it just got better and better. The big highlight was seeing a couple of Sargeant Bakers, which i’d never seen before.

I headed east south-east across the mouth of the estuary and found some more substantial reefs in deeper water. Vis still wasn’t good, but a couple of crays around and a few seastars.
